This classroom-based activity gives students the opportunity to experience the thrill of discovering mysterious objects when they conduct their own archaeological excavations and dig up ‘hidden’ artefacts, some of which are 4000 years old! Working in pairs, students will be provided with a large tray of ‘soil’ (in reality black rubber pellets) in which 20 artefacts have been buried. Using a trowel and a brush, the young archaeologists will dig carefully until they have uncovered all 20 objects and then have a go at placing them on a Time Line. They will choose one object to study in more depth and make rubbings of the Roman coins. This workshop is educational and great fun and shows that archaeology can make a very real contribution to learning in the classroom.
